.who is the Holy Spirit?.

One of the top desires of many Christians is to hear from God.

Many people ask me “When you say you hear from God what do you mean?” “Is it an audible voice?” “What do people mean by a still voice?” “Do you hear from Him everyday?”

The truth of the matter is there are MANY ways that God speaks to us; for some people it IS an audible voice, at times it’s through visions, people, etc. Regardless of any one of these ways, the MAIN way that all born again Christians hear from God is through the Holy Spirit. That is what God provided. We can’t be skipping tryna get to visions and we don’t even know the main tool given to us. Slow your roll and let’s get to know the Holy Spirit.

* Clears throat and fixes imaginary tie * Alright, so the Holy Spirit didn’t JUST appear after Jesus ascended to heaven. He has ALWAYS been around. Genesis 1:2 says “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Boom! He was there in the beginning. Let’s move on. Lol. You can’t get more “beginning” than Genesis, lol. I kid, but here you see that The Holy Spirit has always been there.

I been doing this - Holy Spirit

There are many forms of God and the Holy Spirit is one of them. Jesus was the human form, the Holy Spirit is the Spirit form. They are the trinity. So you better put some RESPECK on their names! All tree of ‘em.

God’s Spirit gives life (to many people, situations, etc.) but in the beginning His Spirit gave life to Adam. Remember when I said that you are a spiritual being and once your spirit leaves your physical body, that’s when you no longer have life?

Genesis 2:7 says “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living being.”

Breath of life is another term for the Holy Spirit. God breathed His Spirit into Adam and Voilà!

The Holy Spirit is a He. The Bible never refers to Him as “it.”

His momma call Him He, I'mma call him He

We now have the privilege of having the Holy Spirit, God Himself, reside WITHIN us (this is goose bumps worthy), but during the times of the Old Testament the He didn’t reside in people. Instead, He would temporarily come upon people to empower them to do something, and then leave. Here are some examples:

Numbers 11:25 – “Then the Lord came down in the cloud `{`form of the Spirit`}`, and spoke with him `{`Moses`}`, and he took some of the power of the Spirit that was on him and put it on seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on then, they prophesied- but did not do so again.”
1st Sam 16:13- “So Samuel took the horn of the oil and anointed him `{`David`}` in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David.”
Judges 14:19 – “Then the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him `{`Samson`}`. He went down to Ashkelon , struck down thirty of their men…..” etc. In this case, the Spirit came empowered him to be able to do something.

Just as the Spirit, came on people, it also left. Going back to 1st Samuel 16:14, it says “Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.”

Let me take this moment to clarify that when you are reading the word, pay attention to whether the word spirit is capitalized or not. (I mentioned it in my How to Read the Bible post) If it is a capital S, it denotes the Spirit of God or the Holy Spirit, however if it is with a lowercase s, it denotes man’s spirit or a spirit that’s not the Holy Spirit. This is important to know in order to not fall into misinterpreting or taking things out of context. In the above scenario, God’s Spirit left God, but that evil spirit is written with a lowercase s. So God didn’t necessarily “give” him something evil, but instead, God removed his covering from him and the devil pretty much had a field day.

Alright so now that we know how the Spirit performed in the Old Testament, let’s skip to the new testament and see the difference there.

In Matthew 3:11 John the Baptist says that he baptizes with water for repentance, but ``the one who comes after him (Jesus) will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire” – so you get the Holy Spirit from Jesus. He said Himself in

John 18:7 that “Unless I go away, the Advocate `{`another name for the Spirit`}` will not come to you, but if I go I will send him to you.”

This is because when Jesus was walking with the people they didn’t NEED the Holy Spirit, because Jesus was with them. They had the human form of God walking around with them, but when He left, He said he wouldn’t leave them as “orphans’, so he sent the Spirit form to dwell within them. And how much more personal is that? God within you.

By now I hope that you’ve noticed that there are many forms of the Holy Spirit. All these forms are kind of “inception-like” aren’t they? Lol.

So just to recap there are many forms of God, one of them being His Spirit form, but the Spirit itself also has many forms. In the earlier example given, you see that the Spirit came down as a cloud on Moses. (Numb 11:25) When Jesus was baptized in Luke 3:22, it says “..and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove.” In another example given earlier, of the Spirit coming upon David, it was in the form of anointing oil that Samuel placed on him (1st Sam 16:13). This is why you may see some Christians, using anointing oil for healing or whatever.

They’re not crazy; they are being scriptural. You may ask yourself “So how is that oil in the bottle the really Holy Spirit? All I see is some EVOO for a braid out” Well, that would be the same way communion wine is the blood of Jesus. You see grape juice, but it has been prayed over and blessed, and now through faith, represents the blood of Jesus. This is the same way that anointing oil represents the Holy Spirit; powerful to do what the Holy Spirit does.

So now let’s talk about what the Spirit does (so you’re at least putting that anointing oil on with a purpose)

1. First of all, He lives within you

and gives you the TRUTH about situation. Truth that goes beyond what your eyes see or what your hands feel.

John 14:17- When Jesus is telling his disciples about Him, He says “…the Spirit of truth. The world can’t accept him because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be IN you.”

2. He convicts

This is like the main way He speaks to us. He convicts your “insides” for lack of a better word. Lol. Have you ever had a moment where you say “something just told me to do this instead of that and it worked out” or “my gut was just telling me…ugh and it always works out”- that’s conviction through the Holy Spirit. Replace “something” and “my gut” with the Holy Spirit and credit the right person.

A lot of people always want God to talk to them, the truth His, He has been! You just don’t recognize Him. Get to know Him more (read your Word) and you’ll recognize Him. Because of the Holy Spirit, like Paul said in Romans 8, you are no longer a slave to sin. The very first line says “there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” Jesus doesn’t have to condemn you because you have a Holy Spirit inside of you that convicts you every time you KNOW you ain’t right. Lol. There’s been times when I’ve gotten to work late, NO ONE is around, I could legitimately just write down my correct time and no on would know- but the conviction of the Holy Spirit inside me just won’t let me do it. I just can’t..I’ll feel bad, and I won’t stop feeling bad unless it is the honest time on there. Yes we are all human and all sin at time, but born again Christians may commit sins, but they aren’t living IN sin. Living in sin means there is no conviction with the commitment of sins.

Someone without the Spirit inside of them is straight chillin! Just ruining their lives and don’t even know it (that’s what Paul means by being a slave to sin) I had a conversation with a friend once about how some of these police officers who kill innocent Black men can thereafter do news interviews and say “I can sleep at night.” I’m like and they REALLY can. There is NO conviction inside of them whatsoever. There is no Christ in them. On the other hand, a police officer who was once on the Steve Harvey show who wrongfully and intentionally sent an innocent Black man to jail came back and asked for forgiveness. He said He found God and he had no inner peace until he went and confessed of what he did. He had conviction of the God within him.

3. He reveals and gives insight- Matt 16:13-17

On one occasion when this happened while Jesus was walking with his disciples, He asked who people thought He was. [See the Jewish people believed that He was one of the prophets from the old testament that had returned. They were waiting for Elijah, the one who they believed to be the Messiah to come back.] So anyway, they are all just kind of guessing who He is then Peter says “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” and Jesus then replied “…this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father who is in heaven.” –Peter didn’t get that because he was smarter or studied more- God revealed it to him through His Spirit. So ask God to give you understanding and enlighten you through His Spirit.

4. He leads you and guides you- Luke 4:1

During the temptation of Jesus Christ- it states “And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led in the Spirit in the wilderness during forty days, being tempted of the devil.” So He can lead you places; whether it is to a new job, a new state, this hotel instead of that that, etc.

5. He empowers

Some of the OT examples given earlier in this post show that, but after that same temptation of Jesus it states in Luke 4:14 that “And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit.”

6. He helps you/comforts- John 14: 16

Jesus tells his disciples “And I will ask the Father, and he will help you.” [other versions say comfort] So He is referred to as your Advocate or Comforter. When you see people in this world lose someone and you don’t even know how to comfort them, yet you see them able to forgive that person and your just like How Sway??…that’s nothing but God.

7. He helps you when you are weak.- Romans 8:26

Paul says “…The Spirit helps us in our weakness.”

8. Helps you pray

The very next line says “We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searched our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”

This is pretty much referring to tongues. Without going into too much detail (that’s for another post), when a person prays in tongues they aren’t praying with their mind but with their spirit. Praying in your spirit (or in tongues) lets the Holy Spirit take over because at times you don’t even know what to pray concerning a situation. But when you pray in the spirit you know that the Holy Spirit is interceding for you and even more importantly, He is praying according to the will of God, and you can NEVER go wrong with that.

Sometimes when we pray with our understanding, we may be praying for things that might not even be lined up with the will of God so it’s not effective. There’s not a more effective prayer than praying in the spirit. And the best part is when you do this the devil has no idea what you are saying #bloop! #impettylikethat

9. Lastly, He gives spiritual gifts.

these gifts are found in 1st Corinthians 12: 4. Without going into full detail they are listed as:

  1. the message of wisdom
  2.  the message of knowledge
  3.  the message of faith
  4.  gift of healing
  5.  gift of miraculous powers
  6.  gift of distinguishing between spirits (spiritual discernment)
  7.  gift of prophecy
  8.  gift of different tongues
  9.  gift of interpreting tongues
